Testcontainers with pgvector
Provision an isolated, real PostgreSQL dependency for repeatable integration tests.
Reviewed: · Content owner: Interview Preparator
What you will learn
- Pin a database image with the required extension.
- Inject dynamic connection properties into Spring.
- Make missing Docker an explicit integration failure.
Before you start
The flow
- 1.Find Docker
- 2.Start container
- 3.Publish dynamic JDBC
- 4.Run assertions
- 5.Clean owned resources
Use the right dependency
The test uses pgvector/pgvector:0.8.0-pg17 and explicitly marks it as a compatible PostgreSQL image. A generic postgres image without the vector extension cannot validate the same schema. Pin the image tag and test library versions; use an immutable digest when your delivery process maintains one.
Testcontainers chooses a host port dynamically. DynamicPropertySource passes the actual JDBC URL and credentials to Spring, avoiding fixed-port conflicts and assumptions that container ports equal host ports.
Lifecycle and ownership matter
The integration profile starts one disposable database for the test class. It does not opt into reusable containers or shared production data. Testcontainers resource cleanup handles the test-owned container at process exit; per-test documents are additionally cleaned by the tests.
A Docker-compatible daemon must be reachable by the test process. A successful docker client installation alone does not prove daemon availability. Inspect startup logs rather than adding sleeps to hide readiness problems.
Keep the gate honest
The -Pintegration profile deliberately fails if Docker or the database image is unavailable. Plain mvn test remains useful without Docker, but does not claim persistence coverage. In CI, cache artifacts and image layers where appropriate while keeping correctness independent of cache contents.

Interview questions
Why not bind the test database to a fixed host port?
Dynamic mapping avoids collisions and supports parallel environments; Spring receives the actual address.
Does Testcontainers replace SQL assertions?
No. It provisions infrastructure; tests must still verify schema, filters and observable behavior.
Should a missing daemon silently skip the release gate?
No. A required integration job must fail or be explicitly reported as unverified.
Practice
Run the suite twice and verify that it uses fresh database state and leaves no test-owned running container.
Check your solution
- The real vector extension is available.
- Dynamic JDBC settings reach the Boot context.
- Missing infrastructure cannot produce a false green result.
