Integration Testing
Test observable behavior across real boundaries without mistaking mocks for infrastructure evidence.
Reviewed: · Content owner: Interview Preparator
What you will learn
- Choose a focused integration boundary.
- Exercise MVC, security and persistence together where necessary.
- Keep fast unit checks separate from infrastructure tests.
Before you start
The flow
- 1.Define risk
- 2.Start real boundary
- 3.Arrange data
- 4.Exercise request
- 5.Assert outcome
Choose what is real
An integration test checks a connection between components. Name that boundary explicitly: MVC plus validation, security filter plus controller, or pgvector plus retrieval. A Spring context with every collaborator mocked is not proof that SQL filters work.
PgVectorRagIT starts the real Boot context and database, then builds MockMvc with the actual security filter chain. The servlet container/network hop is not involved; a deployed end-to-end check remains a different layer.
Assert behavior instead of internal calls
Verify a user-visible status and source set, not only that a repository method was invoked. Check that a forbidden request cannot obtain evidence. Use stable test IDs and isolate data mutations so tests do not depend on execution order.
The deletion test creates its own document and removes it in finally. Tests should clean only resources they own; never point a destructive fixture at a shared production database.
Keep the feedback loop practical
Run unit and adapter fixture tests with mvn test. Run the integration profile in CI when Docker is available; a missing required dependency should fail rather than silently skip the proof. Keep external model quality checks separately labeled to avoid flaky network-dependent unit suites.

Interview questions
Is MockMvc an end-to-end network test?
No. It exercises Spring MVC in process, including configured filters when explicitly applied.
Why not use H2 for pgvector behavior?
Its SQL, extensions and vector behavior differ; the relevant risk requires the real database family.
What makes a useful assertion?
An observable requirement such as status, permitted sources or persisted state, rather than incidental implementation details.
Practice
Add a denied tenant request and verify the response does not contain the private source text or ID.
Check your solution
- Real filters and database are exercised.
- Tests are independent of execution order.
- The documented boundary excludes untested layers.
