Structured Output in Spring AI

Map model output to Java records, then validate business and evidence invariants.

What you will learn

  • Parse a typed response through ChatClient.entity.
  • Reject missing or fabricated citations after parsing.
  • Distinguish formatting repair from authorization.

Before you start

The flow

  1. 1.Define record
  2. 2.Request typed output
  3. 3.Parse
  4. 4.Check invariants
  5. 5.Return DTO

Types are the beginning

RagService.GeneratedAnswer declares answer and sourceIds. ChatClient.call().entity converts the complete response into that type. Parsing a record is not proof that a claim is supported, that a source exists or that the user may read it.

The service limits answer length and requires non-empty citations entirely within the retrieved source set. It exposes only cited documents. Empty retrieval bypasses generation rather than asking the model to invent a result.

Plan for invalid output

Malformed JSON, null values and unknown citation IDs are explicit test cases. The public error is sanitized; raw provider text is not returned to the caller as a fallback. Keep retry budgets bounded if adding schema self-correction.

Provider-native schema enforcement can strengthen structural guarantees when supported, but it does not replace semantic checks. Typed conversion needs the complete response; streaming text and complete typed output have different response handling.

Evaluate semantic grounding separately

A model may cite an allowed source while making an unsupported claim. Add human-reviewed claim/source pairs or a calibrated evaluator to measure grounding. The deterministic reference checks source-set membership; it deliberately does not claim a complete truth detector.

Interview questions

What does entity() guarantee?

It attempts typed conversion; use the selected schema features and still validate nulls, invariants and permissions.

Can a valid source ID support a false claim?

Yes. Citation membership and semantic support are separate checks.

Should every malformed response retry forever?

No. Use a bounded recovery policy and a stable failure outcome.

Practice

Add a maximum citation count and reject duplicate IDs without silently widening the evidence set.

Check your solution

  • Malformed, null and fabricated references fail.
  • A valid sourced answer succeeds.
  • Semantic grounding is documented as a separate evaluation.
